From October 11, 2024 to March 30, 2025 the Czapski Palace will host an exhibition of photographs from the collection of the Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw – „And Now Photography”. The exhibition includes both artistic photographs taken from the 1930s to the 21st century, as well as archival photographs relating to the life of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. For the first time, photographs constituting an important part of the collections of the Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Warsaw, will be shown to the general public.

Photography has accompanied the academic life, recording both the teaching process itself and the school’s everyday functioning. The reportage and documentation functions of the medium allow us to glimpse into the past and have a sense of continuity, which is illustrated by the sets of photographs by Stefan Nargiełło and Antonina Garnuszewska displayed in the vestibule of our exhibition, documenting the artistic life of the Academy from the 1950s to the 1970s. Here, we also show documentation of the activities of the ASP Museum and the history of exhibitions organized in our former exhibition rooms.

Innovations in academic studios

Being part of the academic milieu, the collection contains a large representation of student works – we present extant photographs from the studios of Tadeusz Jodłowski and Wojciech Zamecznik, where photography served as a complement or inspiration for graphic composition. The extensive archives of the studios of Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz, Oskar Hansen and Grzegorz Kowalski illustrate the process of moving away from material sculpture towards a medium closer to the present day – photography. Among the exhibits there are works from various stages of education of many future artists who became famous. Many of them used photography in developing their creative work, like the artists from the Repassage Gallery circle.

Artistic and Research Workshops

A separate set consists of photographs presented in the second room, documenting projects of the Artistic and Research Workshops at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, intended for the City of Warsaw. This is photography that documents and at the same time creates a vision of the presented objects, innovative and interesting in themselves, designed by outstanding architects associated with the Academy. In the case of photographs by Jan Fleischmann, Marek Holzman, Zbigniew Kapuścik and Jerzy Sołtan the borderline between documentary and art photography is often hard to define.
