Carla Habierska Receives the First Liu Shiming Art Scholarship at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts

The New York-based Liu Shiming Art Foundation supports young artists whose work explores the dialogue between tradition and contemporary practice, in the spirit of East–West cultural exchange. It partners with art schools around the world, from New York to Beirut, Cairo, Singapore, and Melbourne. This year’s Liu Shiming Art Scholarship, the first awarded at the Faculty of Sculpture of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, went to Carla Habierska. The award was presented at the opening of the exhibition „Upcoming. Selected Diploma Works from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts” at the Czapski Palace on June 19th.

Sculpture as a way of exploring identity, roots, and cultural belonging has run through Carla Habierska’s practice for several years. Carla, a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Sculpture, comes from a Polish-Peruvian family, and her work draws on that dual heritage. The physical, hands-on nature of her process is itself part of this exploration of identity and belonging.

The scholarship will be awarded annually over the next five years to outstanding Faculty students. It is meant to help fund their artistic development and new creative work.

Warmest congratulations to Carla. We wish her continued success!
