Faculty of Painting

The Faculty of Painting prepares students for independent, responsible, and creative involvement in the transformation of contemporary culture. It is located on the main campus at 5 Krakowskie Przedmieście Street.

About the Faculty

The five year programme of long – cycle and full – time master’s studies at the Faculty of Painting enables preparation for independent, responsible, and creative involvement in the transformation of contemporary culture and society while respecting diverse worldviews. In addition to painting and drawing studios, the faculty has workshops dedicated to specializations that provide graduates with practical professional skills. The studies do not only focus on workshop aspects but also on the reflection on the medium itself both its history and future. As a permanently updated form of expression, painting is the subject of lively discussion among the faculty community.

The education programme at the Faculty of Painting provides professional preparation in mastering the painter’s techniques and acquiring the knowledge and experience necessary for artistic creation. The broadly understood painting workshop is built based on additional disciplines including classical and experimental textiles, wall and easel painting techniques and technologies, visual structures and public space art.

Studying at the Faculty of Painting is a good choice for artistically gifted people who want to engage in art and pursue a free profession.

Tradition and experiment

The interpenetration of tradition and the area of experimental search for new things is a special environment for subsequent generations of young people involved in art who, during their studies, work on forming a conscious, individual, and mature artistic practice. This process is supported by the cadre – a group of active artists presenting a variety of creative attitudes and points of view, as well as knowledge, skills, and experience acquired as part of their professional practice.

Programme

The teaching programme in the field of painting, at the five year programme of long – cycle and full – time master’s studies at the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, provides students with professional preparation in mastering the painter’s techniques and acquiring the knowledge and experience necessary for artistic creation.

Educational Objectives

  • The core and supplementary subjects (specializations available at the Faculty of Painting and other faculties of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts) are aimed at developing creativity and implementing artistic concepts.
  • The educational goal is to develop the student’s ability to engage in discussions, and precisely formulate judgments and statements about artistic tasks and problems, as well as phenomena occurring in the world, not only in the field of visual arts.
  • Major subjects are designed to develop knowledge and acquire new creative and technical solutions, preparing for the future graduate to master the painter’s workshop, enriched with new technical solutions. They will also allow students to freely express creative concepts.
  • The implemented teaching programmes prepare graduates of the Faculty of Painting for professional, creative independent artistic activities. They provide with knowledge and competencies to address social needs, allowing students to initiate and undertake artistic projects within the broader context of culture.

Educational Content

  • Demonstration of the possibilities available in the painting workshop.
  • Development of habits of painting interpretation based on perception of the environment and creative imagination.
  • Analysis of historical and contemporary painting achievements in terms of painting content and form.
  • Discovery of means of expression to implement artistic ideas in the process of moving from analysis to synthesis.
  • Design and implementation issues in the area of additional disciplines – classical and experimental textiles, easel, wall painting techniques and technologies, visual structures, and issues of public space art – supporting the broadly understood painting workshop.

Forms of Education

  • Studio exercises based on work from nature.
  • Technical classes – exercises to improve painting skills based on old and newest techniques.
  • Creation and imaginative exercises as the main method of developing creativity (the student creates a rhythm and method of artistic work that is appropriate for the author within the framework of the faculty’s programme).
  • Individual projects – stimulating the student’s creative initiative – including bold and risky artistic projects.
  • Collective projects – thematic trips, outdoor trips, film screenings, organization of thematic exhibitions on and off – campus.
  • Discussion and didactic dialogue. Self – presentation of the student’s work and tasks. Confrontation of students’ views and attitudes with teachers and famous figures from the world of culture, outside the Academy.
  • Master’s seminar – discussion, review, and correction of the topic and implementation of the master’s diploma, as well as confrontation with exhibition conditions.
