dr hab. Mateusz Machalski, Associate Professor

Born in 1989. Studied at the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (2009–2014), graduating with the Rector’s Distinction. He works at the Faculty of Graphic Arts in the Multimedia Artistic Creation Studio. Selected as Designer of the Year 2019 in the Polish Graphic Awards. Recipient of a scholarship from the Minister of Science and Higher Education for outstanding young researchers. Five-time recipient of the Minister of Culture scholarship. Awarded the “Young Poland” scholarship by the National Centre for Culture. Member of the Board of the Association of Applied Graphic Artists. Member of the Program Council of the International Poster Biennale. Member of ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale). Winner of The Best of Design 2018 award from the Advertising Creators Club. Recognized as “Ascender 2018” by the Type Directors Club New York. Recipient of the “Animator 2020” award in the DESIGN ALIVE competition. Decorated by the President of the Republic of Poland with the Medal of the Centenary of Regained Independence.

Artistic director of the magazines newonce.paper and Warsawholic. Author of over 30 type families, numerous corporate and multi-script typefaces, and over 100 visual identities for companies, institutions, and events. Head of the team responsible for the digitalization of “BRYGADA 1918”, premiered at the Presidential Palace with the participation of the President. Author of the intergenerational project Bona Nova, realized together with Andrzej Heidrich – designer of Polish banknotes. Co-founder of the production-creative group BORUTTA and the RESPECT WWA foundation. Author of numerous texts and articles on graphic design, visual culture, and typography. Co-author of TYPOTEKA.PL, the first Polish typography index, as well as numerous exhibitions and cultural events.

In parallel with his design work, he conducts research projects, workshops, and lectures in Poland and abroad.
