From 7 to 29 February 2024 in Gallery -1 in the Czapski Palace we invite you to a cross-sectional exhibition of paintings and drawings, recalling the work of Łukasz Rudnicki, the prematurely deceased artist associated with the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Curators: Rafał Kowalski, Stanisław Kroszczyński, Jan Mioduszewski. Contextual collaboration: Joanna Koć-Rudnicka, Katarzyna Zielska.

Curatorially, this exhibition combines Rudnicki’s early drawings and paintings from the 1990s with his mature work from the first and second decades of the 21st century. The early works are dominated by views of the interior of the artist’s Żoliborz studio, views from the window, vedutas and landscapes. They are full of strong contrasts and compositional discipline.

Marinism

The mature oeuvre is marine and battle marinism. By juxtaposing early and mature works, it is possible to trace the consistency of vision in the painting of the Warsaw-based artist. Łukasz Rudnicki’s works, which are united by the title motif of the horizon, are characterised by technical innovation, a creative approach to painting techniques and extraordinary care.

Open structure

The romantic, emotional pictorial vision and plastic narrative perfectly correspond with the literary layer of the paintings, creating an open structure that allows for multiple interpretations. At the same time, the unique stylistics of these works creates a mood that stays in the memory for a long time, and introduces a pictorial world unparalleled in contemporary painting.

Artist's popularisation activities

The exhibition is accompanied by three texts by its curators, artists and friends of Łukasz Rudnicki. Also recalled is the popularisation activity of Łukasz Rudnicki, who for about a decade ran the 'Wystawa’ Gallery in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district. Posters for exhibitions at this gallery were designed by Błażej Ostoja- Lniski, and their series will be recalled as part of the show.
